The Biology of Pain

While pain is not a pleasant session it is a very helpful and necessary biological function that protects and preserves us. Pain is your body’s alarm system designed to bring your attention to a problem or potential danger. It’s only when it becomes chronic that many people dread this otherwise normal bodily function. Typically, pain becomes chronic when either the cause is not addressed properly in the beginning or continuing issues that assault negatively impact the nervous system, sensitizing and constantly triggering it, even if there is no danger or the initial trauma has passed.

What Is Integrative Pain Management?

Integrative pain management can help with both acute pain resulting from accidents, surgeries or procedures and also chronic pain. While a pharmacologic approach to pain is helpful to lessen the symptoms, we use integrative methods to get to the multiple root cause of pain. We aim to give the body the best possible support for faster and more complete healing. Pain levels aren't just a reflection of one event, such as an accident or surgery, but can also be intensified by inflammation caused by diet, environmental toxins, stress and even emotional and mindset components. Chronic pain can often bring on additional symptoms that patients don't always expect such as fatigue, brain fog, irritability and low moods which integrative pain management addresses as well. Using integrative medicine strategies can also help better manage pain overall and to reduce reliance on medications, as well as speed the overall healing process and give patients a more positive, therapeutic experience. Our integrative medical therapies include IV nutritional therapy, yoga, relaxation and mindful techniques, infrared sauna, acupressure and acupuncture.

How Integrative Pain Management Excels at Treating Chronic Pain

Pain is considered chronic if present for over three to six months. Chronic pain can be debilitating, life-altering and an extremely frustrating condition that impacts approximately 19% of the population, impacting more women compared to men. Pain prevalence increased steeply beyond the age of 65 years old. Pain is oftentimes complex and multidimensional and can be difficult to assess with traditional testing. Often people are suffering from chronic pain and are experiencing it as a “mystery illness” because their doctor hasn't been able to locate the source with traditional methods such as scans, MRIs, and blood work. When pain goes chronic, a multi-pronged approach is necessary to address the multiple potential causes. The causes may include nutritional deficiencies, compensating in other parts of the body in order to protect the area of injury, high levels of stress or ongoing physical strain on the injured area. This is why it’s so important to first understand what pain is, how it becomes chronic, and also to identify imbalances that could be to blame for your chronic pain feedback loop.
